The GAA Injury Benefit Fund is an injury benefit fund, set up by the GAA to assist members with some reimbursement for medical expenses incurred due to an injury sustained while playing Gaelic Games. It is NOT an insurance policy. There is no insurance company involved in any way with the fund and therefore there is no insurance policy number associated with the GAA Injury Benefit Fund.
There is no legal obligation on the GAA to administer such a fund. It is the responsibility of all members to ensure that they have sufficient financial resources for any treatment they wish to pursue due to an injury. If a player is covered under another source, they must claim through that source first – i.e., private medical insurance (VHI, LAYA, Irish Life) or School Insurance.
It is the responsibility of each player (or parent) to ensure they are aware of and follow the terms of the GAA Injury Benefit Fund. If the terms of the GAA Injury Benefit Fund are not followed, any treatment they undertake may not be covered for reimbursement by the GAA Injury Benefit Fund. The terms of the GAA Injury Benefit Fund are included in the GAA Injury Benefit Fund Summary Document. This document is downloadable below.
Claims Notification for Injury dates from the 1st June 2025:
The injured player (or a parent/guardian where the player is U18 at the injury date) is required to register their claim via Foireann. Each claim then needs to be validated by the GAA unit - Buncrana GAA. It is then managed by Allianz, the appointed administrators for the GAA. Details of the claims process are included within the GAA Injury Benefit Fund summary document as well as on the links below:
All claims should be reported as soon as possible after the injury, but must be reported within 60 days of the injury occurring. The day of the injury is considered as day 1.
The GAA Injury Benefit Fund does not pay for physiotherapy unless it is post-surgery.
Any injuries reported after 60 days WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED by the GAA Injury Benefit Fund.

As with all roles within Buncrana GAA Club, the GAA Assistant Secretary is a volunteer position, so players should allow 5 working days for emails to be responded to. Do not wait until day 50 to enquire about setting up any claim!
